| TENUTA DI CAPEZZANA CELEBRATES 1200 YEARS OF ENOLOGICAL HISTORY WITH THE CREATION OF A NEW WINE IN LIMITED EDITION, THE CAPEZZANA 804.
The CAPEZZANA 804, made from pure Syrah, was created in 2004 by the Contini Bonacossi family to celebrate 12 centuries of wine production at the Capezzana estate. Proof of such long history is a parchment dated in the year 804 a. D. which was found by Sandra Contini Bonacossi, daughter of the owners Counts Ugo and Lisa, at the Florence National Archive.
Tenuta di Capezzana is among very few estates that can boast such an ancient historical and viticultural tradition and to put it in Count Ugo's words: "We always talk about our estate as being 1200 years old but the 804 document states that Capezzana was already being rented with its vineyards and olive groves thus confirming that vineyards and olive groves date all the way back to the Roman period".
The first year of Syrah production at Capezzana was 1998 and from the very beginning the Contini Bonacossi family, together with enologist Stefano Chioccioli, had the desire to vinify a pure Syrah wine. The Carmignano microclimate offers especially favorable conditions for the Syrah grape variety allowing it to grow and mature very well, expressing its full potential and varietal characteristics when supported by an appropriate use of green harvest procedures in summer and careful grape selection during the harvest.
It was decided to wait until 2004 for the creation of this first pure Syrah wine to best celebrate the amazing and unforgettable event of Capezzana's 12 centuries of wine history. Syrah, however, already played an important role in the production of the other wines of the estate, particularly for the Ghiaie della Furba to which this grape variety adds length in the finish, white pepper corns and a fruity note of plum compote which blend perfectly with the typical bouquet of wild berries and boisé characteristic of this wine.
The Capezzana 804 represents a unique and important parenthesis in the evolution of the historical Capezzana vintages. It will be available as of December 2007 in a very limited number of 3,800 bottles (0.75 liter) plus 1,040 magnums (1.5 liter).
